Surprisingly Common Plumbing Problems Caused by Snow and Cold Weather

By Four Seasons Heating, Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric - March 8, 2019

You know your plumbing systems can be affected by the cold weather when winter arrives in Chicago. Most homeowners will keep an eye open for frozen pipes downstairs and open cabinet and closet doors when the temperatures drop below zero. But, that’s not all you should be doing.

Plumbing tools

The truth is, that winter plumbing can function very differently than other times of the year due to the snow, ice, and cold. Here are a couple of surprisingly common plumbing problems during the coldest time of the year.

Vent Pipe Clogs

Did you know your plumbing system has vent pipes? These pipes connect multiple plumbing systems throughout your home to release sewer gas and let fresh air in, ensuring everything flows freely.

Because these pipes are connected to the outside of your home, they could be in danger of becoming frozen or clogged. If ice or snow prevents the pipe from venting your plumbing systems properly, you could end up with leaks inside your home.

Cover your vent pipes with the proper valve to prevent ice and snow from clogging the passage. Then, keep an eye on it throughout the winter. Check the vent pipe after snow or icy weather, and clear away any obstructions if you see them.

Store Your Hose for the Winter

It’s easy to roll up your garden hose and forget all about it when the cold weather arrives. Unfortunately, it may command your attention after the interior pipe that leads to your hose leaks or bursts.

An unwinterized hose that is left attached to the spigot can fill with water, freeze around the spigot, and build up excess pressure that can cause pipes to leak or burst. Put that hose away before the first freeze!

Check Your Sump Pump

Your sump pump gets a little break in the winter when everything is frozen, but everything that has frozen will thaw when the spring arrives. That’s why you need to keep an eye on your sump pump.

As water seeps into the ground around your home, your sump pump will have to kick in to keep the basement from flooding. If it has been damaged, or if it’s old and malfunctioning, it won’t be able to protect your home from the rush of water that is common in the spring.
