Are you planning on going on a holiday somewhere soon? Make sure your home is well prepared for your extended absence by shutting off the water and completing a few other simple tasks.

Most homeowners know that they can turn the thermostat up a bit before leaving on a summer vacation and down when leaving in winter to save some money. You may even take the time to unplug all of your electronics, just in case of an electrical fire. At Four Seasons Plumbing & Sewer, we find that not many homeowners know to turn off their home’s main water valve. This is a quick and easy step that can help prevent damaged or frozen pipes, or major water damage from a flood.

How to Shut Off Your Water Valve

Most homes have a main water shut-off inside, so you can stop a water leak due to a burst pipe. This valve is always located near your water meter. It usually looks like a large round and flat knob or a long handle. The valve may be painted red to catch your attention.

To close the valve, grasp it firmly and turn it clockwise until it stops. If the valve won’t turn, you may be turning it in the wrong direction. Gently try to turn it in the opposite direction. If it still won’t move, the valve may be rusted into place. Don’t force it. Instead, give us a call and an experienced plumber can loosen the valve or replace it if needed.

You may also want to shut off the individual water supply valves for other areas of the home, such as:

  1. Sinks
  2. Dishwasher
  3. Refrigerator Ice Maker
  4. Washing Machine

Other to Dos Before You Leave On Vacation

There are a few other things you can make sure to do before leaving the house for a vacation, especially if heading out in the wintertime. Spend a couple of hours checking these items off your list:

  • Check & Clean Out the Gutters
  • Test That the Sump Pump is Working
  • Visually Inspect Water Supply Lines
  • Turn the Water Heater Down to ‘Low’
  • Shut Off Exterior Water Faucets

Taking the time to complete these additional steps before a long trip, not only gives you peace of mind, but it can also prevent a future leak repair. If you are having any problems finding your water shut off, or have noticed a plumbing issue during your vacation preparations, give us a call. Four Seasons Plumbing & Sewer can provide a fast inspection with a quote for any of our plumbing services right away. You can also reach us by filling out our easy online contact form.
